We use social media for many different and personal reasons. For a majority of us, it is used as a means to stay in touch with friends and relatives in a more dynamic way than the weekly or monthly phone calls and letters of the past. Posting about your children's accomplishments in school, your husband's promotion or any number of positive milestones in your family's life are well served on social media. However, there does come a point when the status updates are more along the lines of "hey, look at me"?
We all have that one online friend or connection who's every single post or status update is about them. They seem to spend their every waking online moment posting about how great they are. I am not referring to the legitimate updates about their promotions, engagements or pregnancies; and, of course, we should all be entitled to post an update bragging about our children, partners' accomplishments and our pets.
I am speaking about those updates as mundane as:
"How lucky am I? I snagged the last coke from the break room vending machine."
Then there are the updates which serve no purpose other than to point out the fact that your friend believes they are better than everyone else.
"Had a great dinner (meeting) with {INSERT NAME OF WELL KNOWN CELEBRITY HERE}. Don't you wish you were me?"
Even the two examples above are not that offensive on their face. However, when each and every update is along the same lines without even a passing mention or share of someone else's good fortune, then they start to border on narcissism.
So think before you post. Or better yet; why not comment on, like and share your friends' good news? Who knows; they may reciprocate in return.
