Am I Missing Something or Are They?

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about the trials and tribulations of getting Facebook page fans to become engaged.  It has been an uphill battle on my own page but we are getting there.  My new sense of confusion happens to be regarding other business and community pages.

One of the pages I administer is geared toward highlighting local area businesses in a way to drive traffic to both their Facebook pages and their physical locations.  The primary focus is to promote the "SHOP LOCAL" mentality.  The graphic below aptly describes that focus:

On the plus side, the page has been receiving a lot of positive feedback both online and on the street but... (yes, there is always a but), for every local business that regularly updates their Facebook page and actively engages their fans, there are many others that either do not utilize best practices or worse yet, never update their page.

Surprisingly, these are popular local businesses with a strong following. Granted, I can understand (though not entirely agree) with those businesses that do not use social media to reach out to their current and future clientele. What boggles my mind are those that went to all the trouble of creating a Facebook page and have not done anything with it - some for over a year or more.

It has been suggested that the business owners are either too busy and do not have time or they are not fully aware of how to tap the marketing power available to them.  There are many resources to avail themselves of.  Facebook even has its own page dedicated to Facebook marketing which offers  free tips, advice and webinars.  If time is an issue, there are many local social media marketing firms ready and willing to help the small businessperson out.

The biggest resource of all is usually right under their noses... one of their own employees whose skills and knowledge are being underutilized.

So I will continue to work with what is given me by those businesses who are trying their best to engage the consumer while continuing to shake my head in disbelief at those that just don't seem to "get it".
